Membership

Interested in joining OmniCorpDetroit?

The benefits of membership are extensive. Our space is constantly evolving, and the projects happening around the space tend to change as folks with new passions and skills come on board. We can say for sure that any member gets a place to make, experiment, learn, and share with an amazing group of interesting, creative, intelligent and friendly people.

If you’re interested in membership, the first step is to get acquainted with us.  Coming to Open Hack Nights on 1st / 3rd Thursdays from 8pm-11pm is the best way to meet current members. You could also attend one of our many workshops, which are a great way to see what we’re all about.  Let a member or two know when you decide you’re interested in joining. If you have an idea for a workshop or a project, show us your passion by talking to us about it.  Two existing members will vouch for / sponsor you and help guide you (and us) through your membership process.

Key steps in the process:

  1. Interest – Meet members, and then tell us that you are interested in joining OCD.
  2. Sponsorship – Two current members must vouch for you and invite you to come in to present to the current membership.  Once you have someone vouching for you, you have one month to get to know current members (and vice versa!). That month is important. It’s time to make sure you are really comfortable with us, and we’re really comfortable with you! Come to all Open Hack Nights during this month!
  3. Presentation – All we ask is a simple preso & quick run down: what you have done, what you are doing, and what your future plans are.  Also speak a bit to why you think OCD will be good for you. Keep in mind, it doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but be prepared to talk about yourself.
  4. Vote – The members will vote at the following meeting, and the vote must be unanimous.  If not enough members feel comfortable because they do not feel that they have gotten to know you, the vote is delayed until such time.  The members who made the objection are responsible for getting to know you as a matter of respect.
  5. Fees: Once you’ve been voted in, you need to come up with a $110 initiation fee to get your keys, as well as first month dues of $95. Thereafter, it’s $95/mo.

FAQ:

Q: Why do I have to be “sponsored” – why can’t I just join if I’m paying $ money $ ?

A: There are many reasons why OCD has settled on a sponsorship method for new members. One reason is that we all share tools and other equipment, and we want to make sure it doesn’t walk away. We are open 24/7, so safety of all members comes into play as well. We also want to make sure that we are comfortable with any potential member before we give them a key to our place – which is like a second home to many of us. The best way to think about it is like trying to find a roommate. You wouldn’t just give someone a key to your house because they wanted to pay rent would you? You would want to at least meet them first, right?
