Membership

Think you’re interested in joining OMNICORPDETROIT?
The benefits of membership are extensive and as we’re constantly evolving, pretty hard to enumerate.  But we can say for sure that you’ll get a place to go to make, experiment, learn, and share with an amazing group of interesting, creative, intelligent, friendly people.
If you’re interested in membership, the first step is to get acquainted with us.  Open Hack Nights on Thursdays 8-11 or attending one of our many workshops are great ways to see what we’re all about.  Make it known to a member as early as you’re sure that you’re interested in joining.  If you have an idea for a workshop or a project, demonstrate your passion by talking about it with us.  An existing member will vouch for / sponsor you and help guide you (and us) through your membership process.
Key points in the process:
  • Interest – Meet members, and tell members that you are interested in joining OCD.
  • Invite – A current member must vouch for you and invite you to come in to present to the current membership.  Once you have someone vouching for you it’s up to you and current members to meet each other.
  • Presentation – A simple preso, quick run down.  What you have done, what you are doing, and what your future plans are.  Also speak a bit to why you think OCD will be good for you. You can see examples of a member’s presentation slides at: http://mg2.org/about_mikeyg.html.  Keep in mind, it doesn’t have to be a powerpoint or anything fancy, but be prepared to talk about yourself.
  • Vote – The members will vote at the following meeting, and the vote must be unanimous.  If not enough members feel comfortable because they do not feel that they have gotten to know you, the vote is delayed until such time.  The members who made the objection are responsible for getting to know you as a matter of respect.
Fees: Once you’ve been voted in, you need to come up with a $100 initiation fee to get your keys, as well as pay $95/mo due at every 15th of the month.

Hello my name is Michael, I’m a full time dad and Firefighter/Paramedic along with screen printer/ embroidery and owner of this small business. The reason I felt that it was necessary to contact, is I have been looking high and looking low. I just read the article about omicropdetroit today in “Sunday Free Press”. To further my resume I’m also to student at Central Michigan {off-campus} program in the computer/ Information Technology program. I have been on journey to find some type of group with no luck. Mentoing nor tutor have been succesful. This would be a great way to learn the ways of a computers and other realism of technology. I don’t have any friends that share my ideas nor do think as my ideas as “what they would call sound.” I have many talents and many questions, so what I’m asking is membership to particular club please e- mail me either way ( yea or nae) I would love to seize an opportunity like this they only come around once.

Like some of the previous posters here, I’m also interested in learning more about this site (as well as membership!) Having just stumbled upon you guys, my curiosity is highly piqued. I’m currently a student in attendance at Baker College-Flint, so I’ll be unable to attend your Thursday Open Hack’s, which saddens me greatly…….but I hope to hear from you soon!!! =)

I am interested in checking you out and seeing if your organization is a fit for presenting to our youth in Southwest Detroit. I would like to attend one of your get togethers, however I note that you are meeting pretty late, are those summer hours? Do you need to go through the invitational, et all tp attend a meeting?

umm, maybe im confused but why is membership by invitation only? it just makes me feel like this is an elitist group that only uses mac’s

HI James. This is not our intention at all. There are a few reasons for this. One is because we all share all of our tools and other equipment and we want to make sure it doesn’t walk away. We are open 24/7, so safety of all members comes into play as well. We also want to make sure that we are comfortable with any potential member before we give them a key to our place which is like a second home to any of us. The best way to think about it is like trying to find a roommate. You wouldn’t just give someone a key to your house because they wanted to pay rent would you? You would want to at least meet them first, right?

Also, maybe “invitation only” is not the best wording for this. If you come out and meet a member, and express interest in joining, the member will pass the information off to the group. If you are a friendly person and dont make any members uncomfortable, you will have no issues becoming a member.

      Hope this clears things up.
